Le Cascate del Ghiaccione

The Ghiaccione waterfalls are now very famous in this corner of Valdera. They represent a true corner of paradise, sought after for their cool climate even in the height of summer (if you go in other seasons, remember your jumper!), but also for their magical and secret atmosphere. To get there, you must take the road from Chianni to Castellina Marittima. After a small bridge over a small river called La Torre, you will immediately find another one over the Carbonaia stream, where you can park your car. In the woods on either side of the road there is a small path up the river. The water is icy but the spectacle is breathtaking. There are three successive waterfalls, but the third, called 'Il salto della Capra', is not easily accessible. The second is the most majestic one and is certainly the one that is found in most of the photos of those who have passed through here. Known as "The Jews' Thump", because it seems that in wartime some people, victims of the racial laws, were executed here.Enjoy a few hours of rest in this magical corner, enjoying the coolness, in summer, or the warm colours of autumn. In any season, it is worth a visit. Since hardly anyone makes it to the third drop, you might just be the one to discover and photograph them first!
